Convert an Excel column into a comma-separated list
A column with one item per row can be turned into a single line for a document or form. Column to comma-separated list joins the items using a literal separator. It also works with a single column copied from another spreadsheet or a plain text file.
1. Copy one column
Select the cells you need, copy them and paste them into Original text. Leave out the header unless it should be part of the list. Copy one column at a time: this tool does not turn a multi-column table into CSV.
Pasted column
apple pear orange
Result
apple, pear, orange
2. Choose the separator and whitespace options
The default separator is a comma followed by a space. Use a comma alone for apple, pear, orange, or another separator such as | when your destination requires it.
Ignore empty items skips blank rows. Turn it off to retain an empty position between separators. Trim item edges removes surrounding spaces; turn it off when those spaces are part of the values. Duplicate items stay in place. Use Remove duplicate lines first if you want one copy of each item.
3. Check whether you need CSV instead
Literal joining does not quote or escape values. For example, apple, green on one row and pear on the next become apple, green, pear. The output no longer distinguishes the comma inside the first item from the separator.
If values contain commas, quotes or embedded line breaks and must remain separate fields, use a proper CSV exporter. Putting quotes around the text here does not make the tool a CSV serializer.
4. Copy or download
Review the result before pasting it into the destination. Copy result puts it on your clipboard, and Download saves a text file. To split a simple list back into rows, use Comma-separated list to column; it splits every literal separator, including those inside quotes.
Your pasted values are processed in your browser and are not uploaded or saved automatically.
